Macaw Parrots

Of the many different true parrots genera, six are classified as macaws: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca, and Diopsittaca. Macaws are native to Central America and Mexico, South America, and formerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forests, especially rainforests, but others prefer woodland or savannah-like habitats.

Location: From Amazon to Costa Rica

The first Macaws I encountered was a couple of Scarlett in Costa Rica a fews years back. I remember them screaming in the sky while flying. These two birds were truly majestic and I felt in love at first sight. During all that trip I was so excited every time I had the opportunity to see some. Then, a few years later in Amazon I saw the Blue-Gold Macaw and I had the chance to visit the Clay Lick in the Tambopata region of Peru where I could see a group of Blue-Gold Macaw and Scarlet Macaw at the same time. Unfortunatly they were not going down in the clay because of the presence of monkeys, but it was still an amazing experience.
